One poorly worded tweet has the ability to mar your company’s goodwill, which is why corporate communications through social media sites or mobile apps are not something employers should take lightly. In today’s modern workforce, whoever has access to the company’s social accounts has vast control over its public relations.
Working in the staffing and recruitment industry, I frequently come across businesses hiring an entry-level employee to help run their professional accounts. This honest mistake is one that could inadvertently tarnish the corporation’s name in its respected industry. While these online social interactions may seem inconsequential, keep in mind that once exchanges take place — even though they can be removed, edited or deleted — their impact does not just disappear. Simply put, having an unprofessional social media presence can discredit the business’s communications long term, so it’s critical to be careful who has access to these accounts.
Social media is an innovative form of unrestricted corporate exposure, and this media presence also regulates how the current 2.3 billion social media users perceive the organization socially. How the professional account speaks to others, responds to praise and deals with situational encounters will reflect on the business in more ways than one. All it takes is a few users viewing, mocking and sharing social content before the online community is questioning and attacking the standards of an entire organization.
Some employers may choose to hand over free, high-traffic corporate communications opportunities to a newly-hired employee simply to save in one area, but at what cost?
